Realizing My Dreams
I am starting this blog to document my journey of realizing my dreams through fashion. I’m not sure what my dream, purpose, or goal is fully yet, but I am ready to stop hiding behind excuses (in the words of my DP “What are excuses?” lol) and finally live out loud.

Nail Game-Victoria Beckham
I love getting my hair and nails done, especially my nails. For some it makes them feel fancy, but for me I feel like an “Ambitious Girl” (Wale). I love getting inspired by thinks I see and take it to the ladies at the nail salon. The inspiration for my thumb this time came from Victoria Beckham’s guest editor letter of Glamour’ September issue.
Christmas Party and the City
Holiday parties are stressful, but office holiday parties are even more stressful. And APPEARANCE is EVERything! You want to look hot, like I did (lol), but yet appropriate. I looked for a dress for months, buying one and returning it even recruiting friends and family for my search of the perfect dress. My vision was short, to show off my long legs, sparkly, and FABULOUS!! After finding the perfect dress I had to have the heels to match, sky high and unrealistic to walk or dance in, que my pumps. Ultimately I looked great and I upgraded my look with some eye candy…..a Michael Kors watch lol.
My New journey!
I am on a journey of self discovery! I am looking to have a confident heart and one in God. Part of my journey is choosing to do things I want to do without listening to the voices of others over my own. The first thing I’m dabbling in is makeup!
My journey to the Land of Sephora!
I’ve always looked at Sephora, unlike MAC, as the Willy Wonka Alice in Wonderland of makeup stores. You know super cool, crazy, a bit insane, and completely terrifying lol. I’ve been wearing makeup since the summer of going to my sophomore of undergrad. I had never had it on except for special occasions.
My starter kit included the basic shades from MAC- Amber Lights, Folie, and Mythology! They were simple, beautiful, and easy shades for a makeup illiterate like myself. Fast forward to February 2013 I enter Sephora looking for moisturizer, again clueless, and speak with Audrey. She was engaging and informative. Her knowledge seeped from her lips, and I was hooked. I had to know more about this one time baffling and daunting place. I mentioned wanting to know more about makeup, and she mentioned they do makeup consultation with a $50.00 purchase. I took that as a mental note to make an appointment. A month later I made an appointment and my life was FOREVER changed.
My makeup artist assigned to me was Parrish. She was tall, dark skinned, and her face was BEAT to the heavens! I admitted to her that I wasn’t sure what I wanted; I just wanted to learn. I showed her some pics from Pinterest and then the magic happened.
She started by matching my foundation to my skin. **Matching your foundation is key. Swatch your skin to match your skin especially to match your neck** She used for me Make Up Forever HD foundation. To fill in my brows she used Anastasia of Beverly Hills brow kit in Bronette. For my eyes the shadow is from a kit by TwoFaced Natural At Night kit, Make Up Forever Teal (12L) liner, and TwoFaced’s Better Than False Lashes mascara. Last but not least the lipstick!!! Lipstick is a choice. It is a commitment lol. It is for the bold! And I chose, committed to, and boldly chose a bright pink! I chose Palomino by Bite Cosmetics. I also asked about the power of RED, and how to choose THE best for yourself. Parrish then told me “red lipstick is personal and something only you can decide”. We finally came across the perfect red for me, Cruella by NARS.
As she was applying the makeup she began investing in me by asking questions, listening, and learning more about me. She gave me great tips to navigate the Land of Oz called Sephora (which I will share in a later post). I didn’t get everything she put on me but I got a few things. I left that consultation feeling confident, encouraged, and EXCITED!!
After doing some research via YouTube I choose the original Naked palette by Urban Decay. Their palette of beautiful neutrals. Most believe MAC is the only way especially the quality of the pigments. The pigment quality is amazing, and being a woman of color they show up great on my skin! My favorite color of the palette is Half Baked (gold shimmer- similar to MAC’s Amber Lights) Shades: Gunmetal, Sidecar, Half Creep, Baked, Sin, Smog, Toasted, Darkhorse, Hustle, Virgin, Buck, Naked, Creep
My natural hair journey.
I decided to go natural on January 18, 2013. This is a pic from month 2. Some people go natural because their hair is damaged or they want to “get back to their roots”, but I wanted longer and thicker hair. My hair (pic with the curls) was not damaged it just never grew longer than my shoulders. My hair was consider long for “black girl” (which is a stereotype for another day). But my length was a problem for me, because I want long thick hair.
I never wanted to go natural, because I enjoyed my relaxed edges and I don’t like the look of “nappy” hair. But I am committed! Instead of doing the “big chop” I decided to transition. **Transition means letting the natural hair grow out while still having relaxed hair**. Natural hair is like having a full time job, because it takes time, energy, and patience. My relaxed hair was low maintenance, so this a big change and adjustment.
Instead of chopping off all my hair I decided to rock a bob. I was inspired by Nicole Richie’s bob, because it was chic. It fit her face and wasn’t overwhelming.
